CACTUS PAINTINGS
Acrylic on canvas
Various sizes
An ongoing study of miniature cacti and the images used to package them. In initial smaller works, the intention was to deflate traditional phallic imagery in art history, thus the naming of each piece after a heroic male character from literature or history. As the project developed, greater emphasis was given to the use of cultural shorthand to invoke a sense of the exotic, whether it be a pastiche desert landscape or native american head-dress. 'Indian Rainbow'is the name of a company that sells cacti that have been spray-painted and decorated with flocking, increasing their pop styling.
